Karen Hein, Youth as a Resource
Karen Hein, MD, is the immediate past president
of the William T. Grant Foundation. She served as president from
September 1998 to July 2003. As president, she shaped the foundation’s
efforts to help create a society that values young people and enables
them to reach their full potential. The foundation pursues this
goal by investing in research and in people and projects that use
evidencebased approaches. In addition, Dr. Hein was the executive
officer of the Institute of Medicine (National Academy of
Sciences) from December 1995 to June 1998. Dr. Hein is clinical
professor of pediatrics, epidemiology, and social medicine at Albert
Einstein College of Medicine in New York. From 1993 to 1994, she
worked on health care reform as a member of the Senate Finance Committee
staff in Washington, DC.
