Alan I. Leshner, Substance Abuse
Alan I. Leshner, PhD, is chief executive officer
of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and publisher
of Science. Dr. Leshner formerly was director of the National Institute
on Drug Abuse. He also has held senior positions at the National
Institute of Mental Health and the National Science Foundation (NSF).
Dr. Leshner went to NSF from Bucknell University, where he was professor
of psychology. While on the faculty of Bucknell, he also held long-term
appointments at the Postgraduate Medical School in Budapest, Hungary;
at the Wisconsin Regional Primate Research Center; and as a Fulbright
Scholar at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel. He is the
author of numerous book chapters and papers in professional journals.
He also wrote a major textbook on the relationship between hormones
and behavior. Dr. Leshner received his undergraduate degree in psychology
from Franklin and Marshall College and his MS and PhD degrees in
physiological psychology from Rutgers University. In 1996, he received
the Presidential Distinguished Executive Rank Award, the highest
award in federal service.
