James D. Sargent, Children and
Media
James D. Sargent, MD, is a professor of pediatrics
at Dartmouth Medical School. Dr. Sargent received his medical degree
from the Tufts University School of Medicine. He completed his residency
and a fellowship in pediatrics at Boston City Hospital before joining
the Dartmouth Medical School faculty in 1989. He specializes in
epidemiology and children’s health. He is principal investigator
of a study examining visual media influences on adolescent smoking
behavior. In another study, he developed and implemented a tobacco
use prevention intervention for rural schoolchildren in grades K
through 12. In addition, he has conducted various studies in childhood
lead poisoning, including an evaluation of calcium as a nutritional
preventive agent, and several ecological studies identifying geographical
predictors of lead poisoning.
