WATER INTOXICATION IN THE NEWS--A REMINDER TO USE FORMULA ACCORDING TO DIRECTIONS
Recent news reports have focused on water intoxication. Though not common, this serious condition can occur when young infants are fed water in addition to breastmilk or formula, or when formula is diluted with too much water. The baby not only receives too few nutrients, but also the electrolyte balance is disturbed and seizures may occur. The AAP reminds parents not to try to "stretch" their budgets by adding extra water to infant formula. Instead, follow manufacturer's directions carefully, and if you have questions about feeding your infant, ask your pediatrician.
Breastfeeding provides ideal nourishment for infants, including sufficient liquid.
Parents who use formula but are having trouble affording it should contact their county health department, social service agency, food pantry, or community organization that supports parents and children.
