NEWSGROUPS (Usenet)

Usenet, also known as network news, is a worldwide bulletin board system. It is a great source of current information, but can provide an overwhelming amount of material (often likened to drinking from a fire hose). In addition, the accuracy of material posted on Usenet is not always reliable - so again, make sure to double-check information with another source. It is helpful to remember that the Usenet is a public forum and if you post anything on any bulletin board, other users can get information about you (like your e-mail address). and read anything that you wrote (like your political opinion).

You can access Usenet with most commercially available servers (America Online, CompuServe, Prodigy, Netscape) by accessing Newsgroup or Usenet. Usenet newsgroups have names with multiple parts separated by dots, the first part is called the hierarchy and tends to be the same for related groups. If you want to subscribe to any newsgroup, most programs will provide prompts to do so. You may be bombarded with information when you subscribe to any newsgroup, and unfortunately, there is no easy way to select the type of information you will receive from any one newsgroup. Luckily, it is pretty easy to unsubscribe to a service by following program prompts. Once you have subscribed to a newsgroup and started getting lots of mail, it is also pretty easy to save the articles you want and delete the articles you don’t want.

PointCast at http://www.pointcast.com offers a service that replaces your screen saver with a screen full of breaking news on specified subjects. Unfortunately, requires that you be logged into your server continuously.

If you want to search for a newsgroup, there is one site that specializes in Usenet, it is called DejaNews and is located at http://dejanews.com.

MAILING LISTS

Mailing lists allow people with shared interests to send messages to each other and hold group conversations. Mailing lists are different from newsgroups in that a separate copy of the mailing list message is e-mailed to each person on the list. They tend to be more specific and have fewer members than newsgroups. Each mailing list has a central e-mail address, called a list address, to which messages of interest to the group are sent and from which messages are re-mailed to group members. Every mailing list, in addition to the list address, has an administrative address. This is the address to which you should send messages about subscribing or unsubscribing from the list.

Some lists are maintained manually (by humans) and do not require a fixed format to make a request, while others are maintained automatically and require fixed format to make a request. Most lists that are automatically maintained include the following in their address: Listproc, LISTSERV, Mailbase, Mailserve, Majordomo. For these automatically maintained mailing lists, you need only write an e-mail message with SUBSCRIBE + name of mailing list.

To find out what general mailing lists are available to you, the following are web sites that maintain indices of mailing lists:

The Academy has established a presence on the web through the Academy’s homepage, which allows press to find information about the Academy and obtain up-to-date press releases/statements/events/etc.

In the not so old days, tracking reporter’s beats, pediatrician’s coverage of events and the AAP’s press coverage was labor and time intensive. Old fashioned clipping services or subscribing to database services was very expensive. Today’s technology offers the ability to do researching yourself with a computer. In addition, the internet allows one to conduct speedy searches of national or local media.

A forum is a special area of an online service dedicated to discussing one particular subject. Participating in professional PR forums assists with networking with colleagues and making contacts.
