Advocacy Resource Guide

This Resource Guide will direct you towards Web sites and publications to assist you with breastfeeding advocacy. You will find links to advocacy publications, organizations, and Web sites. Breastfeeding needs physician advocates! Use these resources to help get involved in changing the lives of families.

Advocacy Publications

  • The Business Case for Breastfeeding Kit ( updated )
    This kit includes a series of materials about creating a breastfeeding friendly work site. It is helpful for any individual, group, or coalition that is working on improving work site lactation services. Elements of the kit are also available individually. It was developed by the Health Resources and Services Administration's Maternal and Child Health Bureau. [ Technical assistance is now available. ]
  • Breastfeeding Report Card
    The CDC publishes this card to report on state outcome and process indicators related to breastfeeding.
  • Investing in Maternal and Child Health: An Employer's Toolkit
    This toolkit for employers provides strategies and tools to improve the health of children, adolescents, and women before, during, and after pregnancy. It was developed by the National Business Group on Health in collaboration with many other organizations including the AAP.

Advocacy Organizations and Web Sites

  • State Breastfeeding Coalitions
    There is a breastfeeding coalition in most states. The USBC provides a list of the coalitions and their contact information and Web sites. Contact these coalitions if you are interested in participating in grassroots breastfeeding advocacy efforts.
  • United States Breastfeeding Committee (USBC)
    The USBC works on many advocacy projects from the support of state breastfeeding coalitions to working within the government to influence policy about breastfeeding. USBC is a great resource for assistance with advocacy efforts.
  • World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action
    As the organizers of World Breastfeeding Week, the World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action is the world breastfeeding advocacy organization. Contact WABA for World Breastfeeding Week and other advocacy ideas.
