What the AAP Is Doing To Support Families

Educating physicians
The AAP is working hard to educate physicians about the importance of breastfeeding and how they can support you as a breastfeeding family. Our most recent effort is the creation of a Breastfeeding Residency Curriculum. It is our goal that all residents (future physicians) will leave residency with education about breastfeeding. Practicing pediatricians are also supported through Continuing Medical Education activities and through our AAP Section on Breastfeeding, a group of 550 pediatricians interested in breastfeeding.

Educating policy makers and insurance providers
Supporting legislation about and related to breastfeeding is a main function of the AAP Section on Breastfeeding and the AAP Chapter Breastfeeding Coordinators. They are helping to make it easier for you to breastfeed when your baby is hungry, even if you are not at home, breastfeed or express milk at work, and ensuring that your pediatrician and other health workers are able to get paid for helping you with breastfeeding.

Creating reliable breastfeeding publications
The AAP has many publications to support breastfeeding. Check out the AAP New Mother's Guide to Breastfeeding book or the Breastfeeding Your Baby: Answers to Common Questions booklet for reliable information to your questions. These can be purchased from the AAP Bookstore.

Ensuring breastfeeding families are cared for during times of disaster
The AAP has been the leader in ensuring that breastfeeding is thought of and supported both during and before a disaster. View our Infant Nutrition During a Disaster: Breastfeeding and Other Options fact sheet for more information.
