| Introduction to the Directory of International Service | ||||

Caroline Dueger MD, MPH
In recent years requests for volunteer service sites for physicians has increased dramatically. Interest in international child health in residency programs is at an all time high and many residency programs are developing global health tracks and international elective experiences in response to this demand. We expect that these young pediatricians will continue their interest in and desire to help the disadvantaged child populations in developing countries. At the same time older and retired pediatricians are looking for ways to use their skills to help relieve the suffering of children worldwide.
The Directory of International Service Opportunities for Pediatricians is designed to assist pediatricians in finding a placement that suits their needs. It was originally compiled through the efforts of Donna Staton and the Section on International Child Health of the AAP in collaboration with the International Medical Volunteers Association (IMVA). We now list over 150 organizations in all parts of the world that need pediatricians for direct care or teaching. In January 2006 and again in January 2007 each organization was contacted by e-mail and/or telephone to ensure that information was correct and up to date. The few that could not be reached were updated by their web-sites. Information changes, however, and if errors are found or if there are other organizations which might be included please contact me and I will make the needed corrections.
