Factors Necessary for Caries

This Venn diagram summarizes the complexity of caries development. As you can see, there are many variables that contribute to the caries process. Caries develops when there is a susceptible tooth exposed to pathogenic flora (bacteria) in the presence of substrate. Under these conditions, the bacteria metabolize substrate to form acid that decalcifies teeth.
First, we will focus on the tooth.
