The Jersey Shore Univesity Medical Center (JSUMC) Dental Clinic is currently the region's only full-service, charity care dental clinic offering free dental care to patients who lack the ability to pay for it themselves. The clinic is part of the JSUMC Family Health Center, which offers coordinated, comprehensive medical care in an outpatient setting to the poor and medically underserved people of Monmouth and Ocean counties.
In 2006, the JSUMC Dental Clinic recorded 4,863 patient visits, including cardiac clearances, surgical cases, and Emergency Department visits, and completed 10,279 procedures. The staff consists of a part-time director, two part-time associate directors, a part-time oral surgeon, 2 part-time faculty members, and 47 Meridian Health dentists who volunteer their services.
Daily clinic activities include the evaluation, treatment, and follow-up of dental disease and restorative/preventive care. Dental rehabilitation usually includes, but is not limited to: fillings and basic restoration, root canals, crowns, partial and complete dentures, extractions, prophylaxis and preventive maintenance. In addition to dental implant services, the clinic provides oral surgery services in conjunction with the JSUMC trauma team. Special accommodations are available to give developmentally disabled and AIDS patients the very best of care. Dental health education is also a central component of all dental visits and
has also been integrated into all patient contacts at the JSUMC Family
Health Clinic, Mental Health Clinic, AIDS clinic, and community
outreach programs.
