SPEAKERS
Benard Dreyer, MD, FAAP is the Vice Chairman of the Department of Pediatrics and the Director of the Divisions of General Pediatrics and Developmental-Behavioral Pediatrics at New York University School of Medicine. He is also the Director of Pediatrics at Bellevue Hospital Center in New York City. He is the co-chair of the Curriculum Committee for the School of Medicine and serves as co-chair of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) Health Literacy Project Advisory Committee. Dr. Dreyer serves as the New York Chapter 3 President of AAP. His primary interests include developmental-behavioral problems of children, such as ADHD, language disorders and learning disorders. He has authored peer-reviewed articles on the topic of literacy and language development and has been involved with evaluating the effectiveness of the Reach Out and Read Program.

Mary Ann Abrams, MD, MPH, FAAP works as Health Management Consultant in Clinical Performance Improvement at Iowa Health System (IHS), where she leads their health literacy efforts, and as faculty for Blank Children’s Hospital Pediatric Residency Education Program in quality and community pediatrics.  In September 2005, IHS was among eight health systems nationwide identified by the AMA Hospital Recognition Project for Innovative Approaches to Patient-Centered Communication for its work in health literacy.  Dr. Abrams serves on the AMA Health Literacy and Patient Safety Work Group, and as co-chair of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) Health Literacy Project Advisory Committee.  She has provided numerous presentations on health literacy throughout the United States.  She is also leads Reach Out and Read (ROR) -Iowa, the coalition of Reach Out and Read Programs in Iowa.

Connie Arnold, PhD is an Associate Professor of Medicine at the Feist-Weiller Cancer Center at LSUHSC-S. She has co-authored over 25 articles on health literacy, health communication and behavior and preventive medicine. Dr. Arnold and Dr. Terry Davis have received over $1 million dollars in funding from HRSA, CMS, NIH, and pharmaceutical companies to develop and assess practical materials aimed at improving providers/ patient communication and education.   She has been the Co-PI on five HRSA-funded patient and provider education research projects, and is currently Co-PI  on a research project to develop a diabetes self-management toolkit for patients with low literacy skills funded by American College of Physicians Foundation (ACP-F).

Norma Kenoyer is a determined learner and active leader in New Readers of Iowa. She is a member of Board of the Drake Adult Literacy Center and an active participant in Iowa Health System's health literacy initiative. She has also been a co-presenter at the National Health Safety Conference.
