Reaching Children: Building Systems of Care
SCHIP Outreach Program
The State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP), implemented
in 1997, helps states expand health care coverage to the Nation's
uninsured children. Pediatricians can play a critical role in
SCHIP outreach and enrollment. The Reaching Children: Building
Systems of Care Program provided a unique opportunity for
pediatricians and other health care professionals to implement
grassroots partnership initiatives to improve enrollment of
uninsured children within their communities.
The Reaching Children: Building Systems of Care Program,
supported by the Maternal and Children Health Bureau, funded 14
partnership initiatives in 2001 and 2002. These initiatives provided
distinct examples of ways pediatricians can successfully reach
uninsured families. Projects focused on improving enrollment of
uninsured children within their communities and educating health
care professionals regarding SCHIP. Projects aimed to improve
access to medical homes for SCHIP-eligible children through increased
provider knowledge and participation.
This Web site provides descriptions of the 14 funded projects
and resources developed by project staff and the grantees. For
