Editor's Corner

If you are a pediatrician and you do any work in the media, whether in print, radio or tv, you are one of a growing new breed of "Media-tricians".

As a "Media-trician", we have 2 major priorities or goals:

1. To foster our own media skills in the many veneus we are involved with: print, radio, the web, podcasting, TV.
2. To help journalists and parents understand how the media, "old" and "new" impacts the health and well being of growing kids.

The American Academy of Pediatrics Council on Communication and Media (COCM) is charged with helping you achieve both of these goals and this website is where we hope to gather information and resources to assist you with both efforts.

The Council on Communications and Media is all about tackling communications and media issues pediatricians need to work in the media world and the practice of pediatrics. Our Web site and blog are the cornerstones and mirror our work not only in the AAP but in our communities. Both technological spaces work in concert to provide you with the most up-to-date information about the media and media issues. They also give you a glimpse of the many ways we all use media to communicate health messages to as many families as we can.

Many people often ask me what the difference is between the COCM Web site and the COCM blog. The COCM Web site is really your media library while the COCM blog is more your op-ed space. Both areas are constantly being updated by our nine member COCM Editorial Advisory Board to help keep you up-to-date on the latest studies and media issues.

My virtual door is always open if you have ideas, suggestions or are interested in getting involved with either the Web site or blog.

Cheers!
