Customize disaster planning to meet children's needs.

Government agencies should work to ensure that adequate supplies of antibiotics, antidotes, and vaccines are available for children; that these agents are safe and efficacious; and that pediatric doses are established.

Resource allocation plans should ensure that these agents are readily available to pediatric health care sites and other locations where children may congregate.
Disaster Preparedness and Pediatrics
The American Academy of Pediatrics offers materials for pediatricians who wish to become better prepared for a disaster or are interested in getting involved in pediatric disaster medicine. A new online planning tool, Disaster Preparedness for Pediatric Practices, helps practitioners and their office staff develop a working preparedness plan, which can reduce risks, maintain practice operations, and ensure a medical home for children. The article Disaster Preparedness and Pediatrics: What's Next? provides an overview for all pediatric health care professionals.

Advocating Effectively for Children

Pediatricians can play a key role in promoting readiness for children and families through education and advocacy. The AAP fact sheet, The Youngest Victims: Disaster Preparedness to Meet Children's Needs, highlights how children are different from adults and frames this information for those who may not have pediatric knowledge or training.
A new joint policy outlines what is necessary to ensure that hospital emergency departments stand ready to care for children.
