An influenza virus is infecting people -- primarily children -- who have been exposed to pigs, particularly at county fairs. Cases have been confirmed in Hawaii, Illinois, Indiana and Ohio.
Pediatricians should ask whether patients with influenza-like illness have been exposed to pigs and recommend testing as appropriate. People at high risk of flu complications should avoid contact with pigs, and people visiting fairs should wash hands frequently and avoid eating or drinking in animal areas.
