Introduction

Membership opportunities are available to pediatricians, pediatric medical subspecialists and pediatric surgical specialists. The AAP provides a huge array of benefits and services to keep you up-to-date and informed and is the only organization that supports you through all four phases of maintenance of certification. As a member, you can be a voice for children and pediatrics.

Directions

See below for member category options. Most applications are fillable forms which can be securely submitted with credit card information.
 
  1. Based on the member descriptions, choose the one that is appropriate.
  2. Once you confirm you meet the criteria, fill out all the necessary application and Submit.
  3. When your complete application is received and processed, you will receive an email notification with your AAP ID number and a 12-month membership will begin from that date.

Associate Member

Pediatric dentists who have received a certificate or a degree in the specialty of pediatric dentistry.

Dues
  • Annual dues $362
Membership Criteria:

An applicant who desires to become an Associate Member must have received a certificate or a degree in the specialty of pediatric dentistry from a program accredited by the Council on Accreditation of the American Dental Association and practice pediatric dentistry in the United States, Puerto Rico, or Canada.

Candidate Member

Completed training in a pediatric or surgical residency that is approved for credit toward certification by an eligible Board.

Dues and Dues Discount Options:
  • Annual dues $494
  • 1st year 50% $241.50
  • American College of Physicians members 10% $434.70
Membership Criteria:

An applicant for Candidate Membership must:

  • have completed training in pediatrics in a residency program that is approved for credit toward certification from the American Board of Pediatrics, American Osteopathic Board of Pediatrics, the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, or La Corporation Professionelle des Medecins du Quebec; or
  • have completed training in a medical or surgical residency program that is approved for credit toward certification from the applicant’s medical or surgical board.

Fellow Member

Applicants must have received initial board certification in pediatrics from an approved Board.​

National Affiliate Member

Licensed physician assistants who have completed training at an ARC-PA accredited program and hold a NCCPA certificate.​

Membership Criteria:

An applicant who desires to become a National Affiliate Member must be a licensed Physician Assistant who received a certificate from a ACR-PA accredited program, practices in the United States, Puerto Rico, or Canada, and is working in a pediatric setting or at least 50% of professional activities is with infants, children, adolescents, or young adults. A copy of the certificate and one sponsor statement by a FAAP in good standing is required.

International Member

Physicians who have received their medical degree outside the U.S., Puerto Rico, and Canada AND practice medicine in a country other than U.S., Puerto Rico, and Canada.​

Dues:

Annual dues 4-tiers based on World Bank classification:

  • Upper income: $374
  • Upper-middle income: $299
  • Low-middle income: $239
  • Low income: $191
Membership Criteria

An applicant who desires to become an International Member must:

  1. have received an MD or DO or an equivalent degree from a medical school located outside of the United States, Puerto Rico, and Canada; and
  2. reside and practice medicine or engage in other professional activities to the benefit of children outside of the United States, Puerto Rico, and Canada; and
  3. either be a member in good standing of a local pediatric society which has been recognized by the International Pediatric Association or be sponsored by an FAAP.

Membership Criteria

Physicians outside the U.S. and Canada who meet the qualifications for International Member or physicians outside the U.S. and Canada who do not meet qualifications for AAP membership.

Fellowship Trainee Member

Fellowship trainees in a pediatric subspecialty or surgical fellowship training program.​

Dues:
  • Annual dues $108
Membership Criteria:

An applicant for Post-Residency Membership must:

  • have completed a pediatric residency approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and be currently enrolled in a pediatric fellowship training program (defined as any fellowship or secondary residency program affiliated with an academic center, medical center, or private foundation); or
  • be currently enrolled and have completed at least 2 years of training in an Alternative Pathway residency program approved by the American Board of Pediatrics; or
  • have completed a medical or surgical residency, and be currently enrolled in a pediatric fellowship training program leading to proficiency and/or certification in a pediatric surgical or pediatric-oriented subspecialty.

Pediatric surgical trainees who are applicants for Post Residency Membership will also be required to affiliate with a designated specialty Section.

Resident Member

Currently enrolled in an approved pediatric residency program.​

Specialty Fellow Member

Applicants must be certified by Boards other than the Boards that qualify them for Fellow and meet the requirements as determined by the specialty section through which they apply​

Specialty Fellow membership applicants must be certified by a Board other than a pediatric board (i.e. The American Board of Pediatrics or the American Osteopathic Board of Pediatrics). Please check the requirements for the applicable section/council before submitting the application. Specialty Fellow applicants will be required to join their specialty section/council.

Medical Student

Membership as an affiliate in the Section on Medical Students, Residents, and Fellowship Trainees is available to students who are enrolled in an accredited medical school.​

Membership Criteria:

Medical Student membership is available to medical students who are enrolled in a medical school accredited by the American Association of Medical Colleges (AAMC) or the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine (AACOM). This is a membership opportunity through the Section on Medical Students, Residents and Fellowship Trainees (SOMSRFT) as a Section Affiliate Member. Membership is with the section, not the national AAP. Benefits are primarily provided by the SOMSRFT.

Section/Council Affiliate

Membership is available to those who are not eligible for national AAP membership. Please be aware that most section/councils require additional materials for consideration.​

Section/Council Affiliate membership is available to those who are not eligible for AAP membership. Applicants for Section/Council Affiliation must meet the qualifications and requirements stipulated by the respective Section/Council Bylaws and the AAP Board of Directors. To find out if the section or council you are interested in accepts Affiliate members, click on the link below to view their specific qualifications.

Did you know?

To help pediatricians transition to electronic health record (EHR) systems, the Child Health Informatics Center (CHIC) is working to raise awareness about the successful adoption and use of EHR systems and provide assistance, support and tools for AAP members to adopt and use EHRs. One tool is the recently launched CHIC Web site, www.aap.org/chic, which centralizes all AAP health information technology resources.

How Can You Get Involved?

Once you join the AAP, there are many ways to get involved and derive the most value from your membership while pursuing the interests that are important to you! Committees, Councils and Sections provide a venue for members with a common area of interest to get involved in advocacy, education, leadership and research. Joining your state chapter can be a great way to get involved in grassroots child health initiatives at the community level. Finding a way to connect and find a "home" within the AAP can provide immeasurable benefits to you both personally and professionally.
