Reach Out and Read (ROR) is a national non-profit organization that promotes early literacy by giving new books to children and advice to parents about the importance of reading aloud in pediatric exam rooms across the nation. ROR provides grants for the purchase of high quality children’s books to primary care pediatric practices serving a significant proportion of children at risk.

One way to encourage literacy skills and keep energetic children occupied in the waiting area is to provide activities that help promote learning skills and healthy habits.
Publishers of children’s books have wonderful Web sites full of downloadable activities and coloring pages.
Libraries also have books in their collections—often in a Teacher Resource area in the Children’s Room of a public library—with reproducible pages with activities to use at the pediatric office or clinic or to give parents to take home.
