Do course participants automatically receive continuing education credits for attending an NRP course?

Although the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and the American Heart Association (AHA) developed the course materials, they do not automatically grant continuing education credits for NRP courses. There are several reasons for this. The organization jointly sponsoring the activity must be involved in all stages of planning. With more than 27,000 NRP instructors conducting courses throughout the world, it would be impossible for either the Academy or the AHA to meet this requirement. In addition, the number of actual hours spent in the course can vary significantly, depending on the format used by the course directors. Consequently, the instructors seeking joint sponsorship of their NRP courses must work with accredited organizations closer to home, such as the continuing education department of a hospital, medical school, nursing school, or state medical or nursing organization.

How do I identify or justify the need for NRP?

The NRP is designed for those who participate in neonatal resuscitation in the delivery room and newborn nursery. The NRP courses are offered in community hospitals by Hospital-based Instructors or are provided as a service to community hospitals by the Regional Outreach Education Program.

In many institutions the NRP is conducted to:
  • Improve the quality of neonatal resuscitation
  • Meet performance expectations or attain hospital privileges or credentialing for staff who attend births or care for newborns
  • Serve as a quality management strategy to improve the process and outcome of neonatal resuscitation
  • Meet regulatory agency requirements for evidence of an education program that supports competency-based practice of neonatal resuscitation

Although Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) and Pediatric Education for Prehospital Professionals (PEPP) courses are appropriate for those who participate in resuscitations outside the delivery room, the NRP also may be useful to pre-hospital providers who desire in-depth training specific to neonatal resuscitation.

Who can become a Hospital-based Instructor?

The Regional Trainer conducting the HBI course is responsible for verifying that HBI course participants meet the following eligibility requirements before taking the course:

  • Have training and experience in the hospital care of newborns in a delivery room, newborn, or critical care nursery setting. The ideal instructor will have ongoing* delivery room experience.
  • Have educational or clinical responsibilities within a hospital or other appropriate medical facility (medical school or nursing school).
  • Have a current NRP provider card (having completed Lessons 1 through 9) or take an NRP instructor course that includes the provider component. Note: It is essential that the hospital-based instructor possess the knowledge and skills presented in the provider course. For this reason, persons are required to complete the provider course before taking an instructor course. If they have not taken a separate Provider course, they must take an NRP Instructor Course that includes the provider component.
  • Be a physician, registered nurse, respiratory care practitioner, or physician assistant. Note: Health care professionals other than physicians, nurses, respiratory care practitioners, or physician assistants who meet the above qualifications may apply in writing to the NRP Steering Committee for a waiver of this requirement. The application must include a resume specifically outlining the applicant's training and experience in the hospital care of newborns in a delivery room, newborn, or critical care nursery setting, and current job responsibilities. A supporting letter from the person who supervised their training and experience in the hospital care of newborns in the delivery room, newborn, or critical care nursery must also be provided. If a application is needed, contact the Life Support Office at 847/434-4798 or lifesupport@aap.org.

*Potential Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) Instructors need to be well versed in the AAP/AHA NRP, its materials, and the techniques used to teach these resuscitation skills; but this is only a portion of what is needed to become an excellent instructor. The instructor must also have experience in the resuscitation of neonates following many normal and emergency deliveries in order to correctly and confidently answer questions about resuscitation. This is generally achieved in a position that involves responsibilities in the delivery room or neonatal intensive care unit of an acute care facility. Positions that require only limited participation in the resuscitation of hospitalized newborns are not felt to give the clinical experience needed to answer questions that the NRP learner might have.

Registered nurses, physicians, respiratory care practitioners, or physician assistants with experience in the delivery room or intensive care nursery are generally able to draw from their more extensive clinical experience and educational training when answering technical resuscitation questions. Health care providers who work mainly in an emergency room or transport system generally have infrequent experience with deliveries. A position which involves weekly exposure to the delivery room and neonatal resuscitation is considered adequate. A position with only monthly or less frequent involvement with those activities is not considered sufficient.

I lost my NRP Provider card, how can I replace it?

To receive a replacement NRP Provider Course Completion Card, please contact the instructor of your course. He/she will be able to issue you a replacement card. If you are unable to locate the instructor, you can contact the Life Support staff for a letter of verification. Life Support staff can then determine if you were a participant in the course, however, the letter will not verify lessons completed. What is the NRP Online Evaluation?

The NRP Online Evaluation is an optional tool for NRP first-time providers and those who need to renew. This new option allows for the NRP Written Evaluation to be taken online. Please note that the NRP Online Evaluation is an examination and not a study session. The online evaluation is accessible through the NRP Web site at www.aap.org/nrp. Before registering for online testing, learners must identify an NRP Instructor who is willing to administer the Megacode, and if required, the Performance Checklist.

After online testing is complete, students receive a printout indicating which lessons have been successfully completed and the date of completion. The student will then present the printout within 30 days to the instructor for verification of completion. If the leaner fails one or more lessons on the online test, that lesson(s) may be retaken one time within 14 days. If a learner fails any lesson 2 or more times no printout is prepared and the learner must repay and must retake the entire exam. For more information and the option for institutions to purchase multiple user codes at a discount, visit "About the NRP Online Evaluation: How it Works, What is Costs, See a Demo" at www.aap.org/nrp. For general questions and information contact LifeSupport at lifesupport@aap.org or 847/434-4798, Monday-Friday, 7:30am-4:30pm CST. For technical issues, contact ExamWeb at or info@examweb.com or 888/889-2578, Monday-Friday 8:30am-5:30pm PST.

Do NRP courses certify the learner as proficient in performing neonatal resuscitation?

The Neonatal Resuscitation Program is an educational program that introduces the concepts and basic skills of neonatal resuscitation.  Completion of the program does not imply that an individual has the competence to perform neonatal resuscitation.  Each hospital is responsible for determining the level of competence and qualifications required for someone to assume clinical responsibility for neonatal resuscitation.

Can not find myself or co-instructors under Find an Instructor?

You may be including too much information in the fields offered.  Try using the first 3-4 letters of the first name and the same for the last name, leaving all of the other fields blank.

If your name or co-instructors still do not appear, the field “Do not display my information to the public” may have been selected.  To see if you had checked this box, go to Update Info in the NRP Instructor Only database.  This box is the last item on the Update Info page.  If you want your information displayed, uncheck the box.

How can I verify the status of NRP Instructor or providers within our institution?

The Academy has developed confidentiality guidelines for NRP Instructors and providers.  The Academy will not provide verification of status or personal information through a third party request.  You will need to ask the instructor or provider for a copy of their NRP card.  The card should provide you with their expiration date.

Netscape, Safari, Firefox and Mozilla Technical Difficulties with NRP Instructor Only Database

If you are using Netscape, Firefox, Safari, or Mozilla, you will not be able to add assisting instructors to a roster, complete an instructor roster, or use the “forgot password” feature.

You are able to add assisting instructors, complete an instructor roster, and reset your password using Microsoft Internet Explorer.  We recommend using Explorer whenever possible.

If you are unable to use Explorer, complete and submit the provider roster without the assisting instructor names.  After the roster is submitted, send an e-mail to lifesupport@aap.org requesting that our office add the assisting instructors to the roster.  The email will need to include both of your names, NRP ID#'s, and the date of the course.

Contact our office at lifesupport@aap.org concerning instructor roster submission and resetting your password.

If you are having this problem using Explorer, I would recommend that you clean out your "Cache" or "Internet Temporary Files."  You may have a corrupted page which is causing the problem.
