The Department of Pediatrics at the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center at El Paso has a total of 7 sites, which consist of the Medical Center at Alberta, the main training site, and 4 pods that function as individual practices. A care mobile visits 9 elementary schools with 5 attached junior high schools on a weekly basis.
The patient mix is predominantly Hispanic, between 87% to 97%, depending on the site. Approximately 93% to 97% of the patients with "coverage" are covered by Medicaid and CHIPS. Many patients are undocumented and are self-pay or no-pay.
The sites where care is provided offer a series of models that go from a group practice style with direct patient care to the main clinical training site at Alberta Street that has 4 pods.
These centers provide a medical home to about 17,000 patients on Medicaid and CHIPS. The centers have close to 80,000 visits per year.
There are a total of 13 residents at the second- and third-year level. For the first time, 15 residents in the first year are being recruited. About 45% of the resident's time is spent in ambulatory service.
