Protocol Overview:
- Each provider will enroll 15 families with patients ages 2-5 and 15 families with patients ages 6-11 who are attending well-child exams.
- Patients will be asked to fill out a survey in the waiting room that will take about 8-10 minutes to complete.
- During the visit, the provider will screen and counsel the family on the assigned topic. This will take approximately 2-4 minutes to complete for the violence prevention group and 1 minute for the reading aloud group.
- Immediately after the visit, the both the provider and the patient will complete a one-page survey that takes a maximum of one minute to complete.
- At one and six months following the visit, a research team separate from your practice will contact the family via telephone and re-administer the parental surveys, which will require approximately 10 minutes of your patient's time.
Practice Incentives:
Practitioners will receive a token of appreciation of $100 upon successful completion of enrollment. All participating practices will also receive information and materials regarding patient screening and counseling on the topic to which they were not assigned.
Patient Incentives:
Patients will receive a parent-child activity book upon completion of the study.
