Brief Motivational Interviewing to Reduce Body Mass Index Study (BMI2)

Protocol Summary

Brief Motivational Interviewing to Reduce Body Mass Index (BMI2) is a two-year, longitudinal, randomly controlled trial to test interventions addressing the key barriers to obesity counseling in pediatric primary care.  BMI2 practitioners received training in brief motivational interviewing (MI) and behavior therapy – efficient ways to help parents change behavior that promises to transform the way pediatricians practice.  Practices were randomized into one of three arms:  Usual Care (control); Pediatrician Only (mid-level intervention) or Pediatrician and Registered Dietitian (high-level intervention).

Aims

  1. The primary aim is to test the effectiveness of the intervention as evidenced by reduction in the children’s BMI percentile at 2 year follow-up relative to the level of intervention they received.

  2. To show increased fruit and vegetable intake and a reduction in sugared drink consumption relative to the level of intervention they received.

  3. To show decreased TV/screen time and increased physical activity relative to the level of intervention they received.
