Training Practitioners in Adolescent Preventive Services Study (Pilot 1)
Adolescent Smoking Cessation in Pediatric Primary Care (Pilot 2)
(SMOKEBUSTERS)

Protocol Overview

Pilot 1:

Pilot 1: Protocol Overview:

Practitioners were randomly assigned to one of two groups:

One group will received continuing education about adolescent tobacco cessation using the Public Health Service Guidelines.

The other group received continuing education about using BMI-for age pediatric growth charts for assessing adolescent patients.

Participants completed baseline and follow-up surveys. Some practices were asked to participate in a site visit. Others were asked about the training and the continuing education material they received. Participation in the study lasted approximately 3-4 months.

Pilot 2:

If you decide to participate in this study:

Your practice will be randomized to one of two groups. One group will receive continuing education about tobacco cessation interventions using the Public Health Service Guideline. Another group will receive continuing education about using BMI-for-age pediatric growth charts.

After receiving the training, you will be asked to practice what you have learned on 3 patients, then participate in role-playing phone call with an adolescent medicine specialist who will provide immediate feedback and coaching, and receive additional training if necessary. Practitioners completing this training are eligible for up to 200 category 1 CME hours.

Baseline and post-training surveys will be conducted to evaluate your experience with training, intervention and evaluation procedures and materials.

Some practices will be asked to participate in a post-training interviews via telephone to assess distance learning feasibility and acceptability, and to explore how to best apply criterion standards for cessation counseling and systems change adherence in order to assess PROS practices' readiness for intervention implementation.

Your practice may be asked to participate in a site visit.

Your participation in the study will last approximately 3-4 months.

Each participating practice will recruit up to 100 patients 18 years or older coming in for a well child visit. These adolescents will be asked to fill out a confidential data form before the visit. You will deliver the intervention during the well child visit. Some adolescents may be asked to participate in a telephone survey 4-6 weeks after the well child visit. Adolescents who participate in the study will receive a $5.00 gift certificate after they complete the follow-up telephone survey. In addition, it is estimated that an additional 300 adolescents will be approached at the well child visit to participate in the study, but will refuse. These adolescents will be asked to fill out an anonymous data form before the visit. Your office staff will be asked to keep a short log of all adolescent well child visits during the study period.
