PROS Adolescent Smoking Cessation in Pediatric Primary Care

AIMS

Adolescent Smoking Cessation in Pediatric Primary Care is a pilot study essential to developing a future clinical trial of the effectiveness of adolescent smoking cessation interventions in pediatric primary care settings.

We will test recruitment and enrollment of adolescents by PROS practices, and will also demonstrate feasibility of follow-up procedures for surveying adolescents about cessation. Our specific aims are to:

  1. Pilot and establish the feasibility of practices' recruitment of adolescent patients and families for research study evaluation.

  2. Further demonstrate fidelity to implementation and maintenance of guidelines based practice system changes and clinician cessation counseling interventions over time, including:
    a) Systematic screening using charting tools;
    b) Behavior change counseling using the Public Health Service 5 A's model, and,
    c) Pediatric clinician referral of adolescent patient to internet and community-based adjuncts and resources.

  3. Assess the impact of these pilot interventions on delivery of cessation interventions, and on intermediate outcomes, including self-reported quit attempts and cessation.

Core support for the PROS network is provided by a grant from the Health Resources and Services Administration Maternal and Child Health Bureau
