National Performance Measures: Care for Children with Otitis Media with Effusion Project
We believe this project will help us learn about how best to assess care for children with otitis media with effusion (OME). This project will also help us understand what tools and strategies can support clinicians in improving care for children with OME, primarily at the practice level. Quality improvement activities will build on the recommendations contained in American Academy of Pediatrics 2004 Clinical Practice Guideline for Otitis Media with Effusion.
The project will be conducted in partnership between the Center for Health Care Quality at Cincinnati’s Children’s Hospital Medical Center and practices that are part of the American Academy of Pediatrics Quality Improvement Innovation Network. The project is supported through a grant from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality.
A broad spectrum of primary care practice physicians and their office staff will test the feasibility of specific measures and tools that can assess and improve the care of children with OME. During this 8-month project, teams will have the opportunity to use formal quality improvement methods, including measurement. Teams will take part in a 90-minute teleconference workshop to review the AAP guideline on OME with national experts and have the opportunity to participate in monthly 60-minute conference calls with other practitioners.
We believe there are benefits for participants involved in this nationally recognized project. Teams will have the opportunity:
- To measure one’s care process for the common childhood condition, OME
- To obtain tools and strategies that can be utilized for improving care for OME
- To work with colleagues from around the country
- To learn from national experts
