Teams test tool(s) using quality improvement science. These projects follow the American Board of Pediatrics Maintenance of Certification (MOC) Standards and have potential to award pediatricians credit toward MOC Part 4 when they participate in these projects.
| Safe and Healthy Beginnings The Safe and Healthy Beginnings Improvement Project, the pilot project of the AAP Quality Improvement Innovation Network, was designed to ensure a safe and healthy beginning for all newborns by testing measures, strategies, and tools based on aspects of the AAP's revised hyperbilirubinemia guidelines. |

| National Performance Measures: Care for Children with Otitis Media with Effusion This project will test the feasibility and reliability of a set of performance measures to assess the care of children with otitis media with effusion (OME). These measures developed by the AMA-convened Physician Consortium for Performance Improvement and the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery and selected by the Ambulatory Care Quality Alliance for use by insurers and health plans have not been evaluated in practice. If the measures are determined to be feasible to collect, the measures will be linked with continuing education and quality improvement methods to test strategies that allow pediatricians to improve the effective use of therapeutics in children. |

| Practicing Safety: A Child Abuse and Neglect Prevention Project **Approved by the American Board of Pediatrics for MOC Part 4 credit! The aim of this project is to decrease child abuse and neglect by expanding anticipatory guidance and increasing screening for possible child abuse and neglect by pediatric practices to parents of children ages 0-3. QuIIN members would implement tool bundles (Parent Tools, Child Tools, Infant Tools) to determine feasibility and efficiency of bundled tools. For additional information click on the link above. |

| Newborn Screen Positive Infant ACTion Project The Newborn Screen Positive Infant ACTion Project aims to improve appropriate responses in the short-term management of infants affected by congenital conditions, identified through newborn screening and to assess the effectiveness of systems of care, including use of the ACT sheets, in assisting the pediatrician to provide appropriate responses in the short-term management of infants. |

Innovations/New Products
| 2010 Guidelines and Tools to Improve Care for Children with ADHD Improvement Project This project, conducted in partnership with the National Initiative for Children's Healthcare Quality, will pilot components of the “Caring for Children with ADHD: A Resource Toolkit for Clinicians” based on the newly revised AAP ADHD guidelines which includes an expanded scope of ages 4-18. Based on the experience and feedback provided after using these tools with patients, these tools will be revised and finalized prior to national distribution. This project is made possible by funding provided by McNeil Pediatrics, Division of Ortho-McNeil-Janssen Pharmaceuticals, Inc. which supports the partnership between QuIIN and NICHQ to facilitate the update of the ADHD Toolkit. | UNC/AAP ADHD Medicine Abuse: What Parents Need to Know The aim of this project is to educate parents on the misuse of ADHD medications by developing and testing a parent brochure. Physicians complete a pre/post electronic survey to evaluate a new parent brochure and distribute these brochures to the parents of their adolescent patients who in turn, visit a Web site to evaluate the brochure. Additional information about this project will be available following its completion. Note: QuIIN teleconference call on results scheduled for March 20, 2009 (must be a QuIIN member to participate). | Test for Respiratory and Asthma Control in Kids The aim of this project is to collect data and provide qualitative feedback on the new paper based tool being developed by Astra Zeneca to improve the identification of pre-school age children at risk for respiratory or control problems based on National Institutes of Health indicators. |

EQIPP Testing
| EQIPP Data Collection Tool: Immunization Course QuIIN member primary care practice physicians tested the feasibility of the data collection tool that has been developed for the upcoming Education in Quality Improvement for Pediatric Practice (EQIPP) Immunizations course. Participating physicians completed the data collection tool on 5 charts of children ages 19-23 months and 5 charts of adolescent patients ages 13-18 years. Participants also completed an on-line survey to help the EQIPP planning group make any final adjustments to the data collection tool prior to inclusion in the course. |
