Mission Statement
"Our mission is to improve child health by eliminating children's exposure to tobacco and secondhand smoke. This will be accomplished by changing the clinical practice of pediatrics through the development and dissemination of practice tools; research; and improvement of community health. The Center will work to create a healthy environment for children, adolescents and families through public education and the promotion of public health policies to eliminate tobacco."

Welcome
Welcome to the Richmond Center website! This site was developed to provide child health clinicians with the information and tools needed to help protect children from the harmful effects of tobacco and secondhand smoke. The site describes Richmond Center projects and collaborators, support from the Flight Attendant Medical Research Institute and other funders, other AAP tobacco research, and a variety of opportunities for education and research.

Little girl eating ice cream. Cigarette smoking and secondhand exposure to tobacco smoke are the leading cause of preventable mortality in the United States. Many infants and children continue to be exposed to tobacco through all developmental stages: prenatal, perinatal, early childhood and adolescence. In neonates and infants, increased mortality has been linked to parental smoking; in infants and children, exposure to secondhand smoke can increase morbidity from respiratory disease; in adolescents, active tobacco use has been shown to damage health and normal metabolism at a critical stage of growth and development.
