National Organizations, Associations, and Government Agencies

American Academy of Asthma, Allergy and Immunology-Provides the Pediatric Asthma Guide, which represents the collective work of many people and organizations. It is endorsed by the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology; the American Academy of Pediatrics; and the National Asthma Education and Prevention Program (NAEPP) of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute. Based on guidelines developed by the NAEPP, it is an easily referenced, user-friendly, and pediatric-focused document for medical professionals. www.aaaai.org

American Association of School Administrators (AASA)-The Governance and Leadership asthma publication includes statistics, laws, and policies regarding asthma. www.aasa.org

American College of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology-Provides information and news service for patients, parents of patients, purchasers of group health care programs, and the news media. Also publishes the Asthma Disease Management Resource Manual (www.acaai.org/Member/Practice_Resources/manual.htm) on diagnosis, assessment and treatment of asthma with emphasis is given to patient self-care and monitoring. www.acaai.org

American Lung Association (ALA)-Asthma-Friendly Schools Toolkit provides evaluation tools and information to assist with improving asthma outcomes. The ALA has many tools and does extensive outreach to schools. www.lungusa.org

American Medical Association - Provides patient education information (including asthma), latest current medical information, and useful links to additional AMA recommended sites. www.ama-assn.org

American School Health Association-Health in Action Journal focuses on implementing health programs at the school level. www.ashaweb.org

Association of State and Territorial Health Officials-Provides a searchable database on media. It allows the user to search by zip code; last name of editors, reporters, and producers; organization; name of newspaper, TV, or radio; and/or by map of states. Data provided is a listing of all newspapers, television stations, online services, and radio stations; identities of reporters and areas of coverage; and email addresses. www.astho.org

Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA)-Provides asthma-specific products and a listing of state-by-state chapters and support groups. Costs of Asthma in America (2000) offers cost estimates for asthma nationwide and at the state and community levels. AAFA also sponsors the Power Breathing? Program that provides a basic understanding of asthma in a peer-friendly environment. AAFA has a model education program, Teens: Taking Control of Your Asthma, in schools in Kansas City, Kansas; Kansas City, Missouri; and Anchorage, Alaska that is a comprehensive community-based strategy for supporting adolescents with asthma and improving their ability to manage their chronic medical condition. www.aafa.org

Asthma Clinical Research Network (ACRN)-Provides information on clinical trials for evaluation of new and existing therapeutic approaches and links to asthma sites. www.acrn.org

Behavioral Risk Factors Surveillance System-Provides survey results by states using questions developed nationally by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention; questions about asthma prevalence in children were added in 2001. www.cdc.gov/brfss/

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)-Provides credible information to enhance health decisions and promote health through strong national and worldwide partnerships. CDC serves as the national focus for developing and applying disease prevention and control, environmental health, and health promotion and education activities designed to improve the health of the U.S. population. www.cdc.gov

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Division of Adolescent and School Health-Strategies for Addressing Asthma Within a Coordinated School Health Program offers concrete suggestions for schools working to improve the health and school attendance of children with asthma. The six strategies identified by the CDC can be effective whether your program is for the entire school district or just one school. www.cdc.gov/healthyyouth/asthma

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, National Center for Environmental Health, Asthma Prevention Program-Provides information on prevalence and surveillance of asthma plus a model for managing asthma in the context of a coordinated school health program. There is also a presentation on asthma for health professionals containing slides and text that can be downloaded. www.cdc.gov/asthma

Cochrane Collaboration-Provides literature reviews of health care issues. www.cochrane.org

Council of Chief State School Officers-Provides a listing of state offices of public instruction that provides name of state school superintendent and contact information. www.ccsso.org

Journal of School Health - Managing Asthma in Schools - August 2006 Issue

Data Resource Center for Child and Adolescent Health - Allows users to search and display charts and tabular findings from individual survey items as well as derived key child health measures from these valuable data sources. The user-friendly site can even display state profiles, rankings, and information for key demographic groups (e.g., child's age, sex, race and ethnicity, household income, insurance status and type), all free-of-charge and available 24 hours a day. The Data Resource Center if a project of the Child and Adolescent Health Measurement Initiative (CAHMI) housed at the Oregon Health & Science University, and funded by the Maternal and Child Health Bureau. www.childhealthdata.org

National Allergy and Asthma Network/Mothers of Asthmatics-Provides publications, news, research, and consumer information on treatment of asthma. www.aanma.org

National Association of Education Health Information Network-Supported by the National Education Association (www.nea.org), Asthma and Schools consolidates information about asthma-related resources for school personnel working with grades K-12. It provides a searchable database that links to educational materials, medical information, websites, and other resources useful for working with schools, children, and youth. www.asthmaandschools.org

National Association of Elementary School Principals-Provides state affiliates' membership links at their Web site. www.naesp.org

National Association of School Nurses (NASN)-Provides information on developing an asthma management and education training session for school nurses entitled School Nurse Asthma Management Program (SNAMP). www.nasn.org

National Association of State Boards of Education-Provides information on policy reports, news, and meetings and a gateway to the states' boards of education sites. www.nasbe.org

The National Center for Education in Maternal and Child Health-Provides resources and tools for staying abreast of new developments and research in education and child health. www.mchlibrary.info/documents/asthma.html

National Conference of State Legislatures-Provides access to legislative policy reports, news, meetings, calendar, and a gateway to state legislative sites. www.ncsl.org

National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute-Provides access to "The Asthma Management Model System," an information management tool designed to facilitate science-based decision-making and evidence-based medicine in long-term asthma management. www.nlm.nih.gov/hmd/breath/breathhome.html

The system consists of three main components:
  • Research links to a variety of searchable databases and other resources.
  • Education provides access to clinical practice guidelines, an electronic library, continuing education and patient education materials, and teaching/learning tools.
  • Communication allows users to connect to online forums and discussions.

The National Asthma Education and Prevention Program (NAEPP)-Provides health-related information for the general public, health care professionals, schools, and child care providers. National Jewish Medical and Research Center (Lung Line)-Includes a personal interactive diary to help track asthma symptoms and medicines and graph quality of life relationships. www.njc.org

U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Indoor Air Quality Tools for Schools-Provides information and links for school districts, facility planners, and school building personnel to address indoor air quality (IAQ) as it relates to asthma and other health problems. www.epa.gov/iaq/schooldesign


National Data Resources about Asthma

Healthy People 2010-Provides information, data, and publications about national goals and objectives in health promotion and disease prevention. It includes a searchable database using the keyword asthma to identify the 467 objectives and 11 national goals. www.healthypeople.gov

National Center for Health Statistics -Provides a fact sheet that gives asthma prevalence and death data by age, race, region, and other indicators. www.cdc.gov/nchs/

National Health Interview Survey-Provides survey data produced by the National Center for Health Statistics, which is a good source for estimates of the national prevalence of asthma. www.cdc.gov/nchs/nhis.htm

Pew Environmental Health Commission-Supports a national task force that issued a report in 2000 on asthma entitled "Blinding Public Health in the Fight Against Asthma" that included recommendations to expand data collection. www.health-track.org/reports

Mortality and Morbidity Weekly Report-Provides asthma-specific data.

State Data Contact Directory-Provides information on potential data sources within a state. Listing of contacts by state agencies includes state and territorial epidemiologists, Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System coordinator, state medical officer and designated State Center for Health Statistics. http://www.state.**.us **initials of state (e.g. AL, WA, OR, ID).

U.S. Health Resources and Services Administration, Maternal and Child Health Bureau-Provides a searchable database for annual Title V Block Grant applications and reports submitted by all 59 states and jurisdictions. Useful data includes the core health status indicator 01, which provides rate of hospitalizations for asthma per 10,000 for children under the age of five. www.mchlibrary.info/databases/
