SECTION ON EMERGENCY MEDICINE
Advocacy Scholarships
2009

November 3, 2008

Dear AAP Section on Emergency Medicine Members:

The AAP Section on Emergency Medicine (SOEM) Executive Committee is pleased to announce that it will continue to fund 2 scholarships of $1000 each, on a competitive basis, to support attendance at the next AAP Legislative Conference, April 19-21, 2009 in Washington, DC.  Section membership is required.

The purpose of these scholarships is to foster advocacy for Pediatric Emergency Medicine and the emergency care of children – an ongoing objective of the SOEM strategic plan.  The advocacy scholarship(s) has been made available by the Section since 2004 and feedback from SOEM member conference participants has been very positive. Their reports may be viewed on the Section web site at:
http://www.aap.org/sections/pem/default.cfm#advocacy

Each $1000 SOEM advocacy scholarship is intended to help defray costs of lodging and registration for the conference. The registration fee for AAP members is $550. Award winners must, of course, attend the conference, and are also expected to:

  • provide a written report summarizing your perspectives on the conference (to be posted to the SOEM web site)
  • join the AAP Federal Advocacy Action Network (free)
  • serve as a key SOEM contact (free)

Attendance is limited to 100 and space has already been reserved for the SOEM scholarship recipients.

Click here for the link to the SOEM advocacy scholarship application form.  Applications will be reviewed by the SOEM Executive Committee and awards given by the end of January 2009. The Section’s intent is to expand the cadre of SOEM members with expertise in advocacy on emergency care for children. We encourage you to consider the importance of advocacy to you and your community.

Those interested in applying should submit an application via regular mail or by e-mail to Sue Tellez at stellez@aap.org for receipt by December 31, 2008.  Applicants will be notified by January 31, 2009.
