Research Committee Meeting
I. WELCOME II. KEN GRAFF AWARD UPDATE. Nate Kuppermann
provided an update on the Ken Graff Young Investigator Award. This year there were 23 first applications
with the large majority were from fellows in training. From these, 6 individuals have been invited
to submit expanded proposals. The Graff
Award is currently being provided annually covered in part by the endowment and
in part by funds provided from the section of emergency medicine of the
AAP. Current endowment is at
approximately $120,000.00 and contributions continue to be solicited. All those present were encouraged to contribute
to the fund if possible. A. High
Dose Epinephrine Study - This study for which Mary Patterson is principal
investigator, has finally been accepted for publication in Pediatric Emergency
Care and will be appearing in the next few months. B. Pediatric
Risk of Admission Score - Jim Chamberlain?s PRISA validation study appeared
in the April, 2004 Annals of Emergency Medicine. C. Serious
Bacterial Infection In Infants With RSV.
The results of this study will appear in Pediatrics in June, 2004. D. Ongoing
Studies - 1. Inpatient vs. Outpatient Treatment
of Infants With Urinary Tract Infection. Peter Dayan of 2. Analgesia for Children With
Suspected Appendicitis. Donna
Sutherland and Charles Macias are leading this study. They too identified protocol complexity as a
barrier to progress and have simplified their proposal as well. The main change is that repeat evaluation
does not need to be performed by a surgeon.
Again, a revised protocol will be circulated via list serve. Currently the study is ongoing at Texas
Children?s Hospital, PEM Collaborative
Research Meeting Page 2 E. New
Study Protocol. A new protocol was
endorsed by the review group this spring.
Dr. Lise Nigrovic from Boston Children?s is the principal
investigator. The title of this study is
?Multicenter Clinical Decision Rule for Identifying Children with Cerebrospinal
Fluid Pleocytosis at Very Low Risk of Spinal Meningitis?. This study is intended to develop and
validate a clinical prediction role to identify infants at very low risk of
bacterial vs. viral meningitis. The
study is a retrospective cohort study.
The goal is to identify 10-15 interested centers. A number of investigators have already contacted
Dr. Nigrovic with interest after initial circulation of protocol. Those who are interested in potentially participating
or getting more information may contact her at lise.nigrovic@childrens.harvard.edu. The meeting was
adjourned at Respectfully
