William
A. Silverman, MD, (retired Professor of Pediatrics, Columbia University) graduated
from the University of California Medical School in San Francisco, CA in 1942.
He trained at UC Hospital and The Babies Hospital, Columbia University in New
York. He joined the faculty of the Department of Pediatrics at Columbia in 1946
and for the next 22 years studied the problems of prematurely born infants using
the newly-developed randomized clinical trial to test innovations. In his latest
book, Where's the Evidence?, he is highly critical of the burgeoning field
of neonatal pediatrics for its failure to draw a line between "knowing"
and "doing." The uncritical adoption of untested therapies, he argues,
has been responsible for recurrent iatrogenic disasters.
