Section
on Hematology/Oncology
Description
The Section on Hematology/Oncology was formed in 1975 and was organized to improve the care of infants, children, and adolescents with cancer and hematological disorders by providing an educational forum for the discussion of problems and treatment relating to neoplastic and hematological disease. The Section aims to stimulate research in, and the teaching of, pediatric hematology/oncology, and disseminate knowledge of hematology/oncology through Academy channels to the medical profession at large, the lay public and governmental agencies. The Section has the additional responsibility of serving in a liaison capacity to the AAP Board of Directors on issues related to pediatric hematology/oncology.
Membership in the Section on Hematology/Oncology is open to Fellows of the AAP who are actively involved in some aspect of the study of hematologic or oncologic diseases. Membership includes, but is not limited to, individuals who are subboard certified in pediatric hematology-oncology. Section Affiliate memberships are available and the criteria are outlined in (http://www.aap.org/member/HEMATOLOGY-ONCOLOGY.pdf). Dues for all membership categories except Resident and Affiliate memberships are assessed annually for the Section at $15. Resident member dues are $10 and Affiliate members pay $60. Total membership is 506.
The Section holds two Executive Committee Meetings per year - a conference call in the fall and a physical meeting in the spring in conjunction with the American Society of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology (ASPH/O) Annual Meeting. Educationally, the Section sponsors a sessions geared toward the general pediatrician that at the AAP National Conference and Exhibition. Such programs usually focus on current updates in the field. In addition to programs for the pediatric generalist, the Section has presented scientific programs that provide state-of-the-art techniques and information for pediatric hematologists/oncologists.
The Section on Hematology/Oncology serves as an expert resource to the Academy. The Section has a liaison relationship with the Alliance for Childhood Cancer.
The Section recently revised the Electronic Directory of Training Programs in Pediatric Hematology/Oncology which was developed for the purpose of informing medical students and pediatric residents of the opportunities available for clinical and research training in pediatric hematology-oncology in the United States and Canada. The directory is available online for use by pediatric residency training program directors, medical school department chairs, pediatric hematology-oncology fellowship directors, and residents.

- Health Supervision for Children with Sickle Cell Disease (currently under revision)
- Guidelines for Pediatric Cancer Centers
- Preservation of Fertility in Pediatric and Adolescent Cancer Patients
- Long-Term Follow Up Care for Pediatric Cancer Survivors - to be published in the March, 2009 Pediatrics
