Section
on Hematology/Oncology
Description
The Section on Hematology/Oncology
was formed in 1975 and was organized to improve the care of infants, children,
and adolescents with cancer and hematological disorders by providing an
educational forum for the discussion of problems and treatment relating
to neoplastic and hematological disease. The Section aims to stimulate
research in, and the teaching of, pediatric hematology/oncology, and disseminate
knowledge of hematology/oncology through Academy channels to the medical
profession at large, and the lay public and governmental agencies. The
Section has the additional responsibility of serving in a liaison capacity
to the AAP Board of Directors on issues related to pediatric hematology/oncology.
Membership in the
Section on Hematology/Oncology is open to Fellows of the AAP who are actively
involved in some aspect of the study of hematologic or oncologic diseases.
Membership includes, but is not limited to, individuals who are subboard
certified in pediatric hematology-oncology. Dues are assessed annually
for the Section at $15. The Section does not have an affiliate membership
category at the present time. Total membership is 563.
The Section holds
two Executive Committee Meetings per year - a conference call in the fall
and a physical meeting in the spring in conjunction with the American
Society of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology (ASPH/O) Annual Meeting. Educationally,
the Section sponsors a program geared toward the general pediatrician
that usually takes the form of a three-hour seminar at the AAP National
Conference and Exhibition. Such programs usually focus on current updates
in the field. In addition to programs for the pediatric generalist, the
Section has presented scientific programs that provide state-of-the-art
techniques and information for pediatric hematologists/oncologists.
The Section on Hematology/Oncology
serves as an expert resource to the Academy. The Section has a liaison
relationship with the Alliance
for Childhood Cancer.
The Section recently
revised the Electronic Directory of Training Programs in Pediatric Hematology/Oncology
which was developed for the purpose of informing medical students and
pediatric residents of the opportunities available for clinical and research
training in pediatric hematology-oncology in the United States and Canada.
The directory is available online for use by pediatric residency training
program directors, medical school department chairs, pediatric hematology-oncology
fellowship directors, and residents.
