F1102 Evaluating the Child With Muscle Weakness
Faculty: Thomas Crawford, MD
Rheumatic and Neurologic diseases manifested by weakness will be discussed, including specific salient historical findings and physical examination findings that help to localize the disorder to the central nervous system, spinal cord, neuromuscular junction, and the muscle itself. The most appropriate laboratory and imaging studies will be reviewed, with a discussion regarding how to interpret the results. Management strategies for the most common diagnoses will be reviewed.

A2023 Neurology Questions in the Office
Faculty: Thomas K. Koch, MD, FAAN, FAAP; Eric Heath Kossoff, MD
This course would inform the pediatrician as to how to accurately identify neurological conditions and make appropriate management and referral decisions in a clinical scenario. Attendees can bring their questions for the most common chief complaints in pediatric neurology and learn a practical approach to the neurological exam.

F2055 Head Trauma: When Is It Safe to Return to Sports?
Faculty: Mark Dias, MD, FAAP
This lecture will review the clinical spectrum, radiographic findings, and outcomes from traumatic brain injury, emphasizing those injuries that occur during sporting events. The frequency, pathophysiology, and significance of the “second impact syndrome” will be reviewed. A synopsis of the various concussion scales and algorithms will be provided along with reasonable recommendations for the safe return to organized sports based on the severity of the initial injury and subsequent clinical course of the child.

The pediatrician wil learn to distinguish ominous (secondary) headaches from migraine (primary) headaches; understand which headaches merit neuroimaging or specialty consultation; review the most current pharmacologic approaches to migraine; and learn non-pharmacologic methods for managing migraine.

S3034 Headache Treatment: Conventional and Alternative Therapies
Faculty: Thomas K. Koch, MD, FAAN, FAAP; Donald Lewis, MD, FAAP
Pediatricians will learn the clinical features that distinguish the primary headaches from the more ominous processes and to provide a foundation for successful treatment. Migraine is the most common disabling recurrent headache syndrome in children and adolescents and occurs in about 5% of young children and up to 15 % of teenagers. The management of migraine in pediatric populations requires an individually tailored regimen of bio-behavioral interventions as well as pharmacologic agents for the acute treatment and on occasion, daily prophylactic.
