The Leonard Apt Lectureship was established in 2000 to honor Leonard Apt MD, FAAP, who was the first physician to obtain certification in both pediatrics and ophthalmology. The lecture is presented during the American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus (AAPOS) Annual Meeting -- now on odd (i.e., 2001, 2003, 2005, etc.) years.

The Apt lectureship has been funded by an endowment created by Dr Apt's family since 2004. Before that time, corporate sponsors covered the expenses. Originally the lecturer received a $300 honorarium, a plaque, travel expenses, registration fees and any other costs associated with the presentation. Now the lecturer receives a $500 honorarium ($750 if the recipient also covers a workshop), a plaque and a travel allowance up to $1500.

Nominations (recommendations) are considered 18 months prior to the AAPOS Annual Meeting at which the lecturer would speak. The Apt Lectureship Committee (as appointed by the Section chairperson) selects the recipient. The lecturer should be nationally or internationally recognized as an expert in a field relevant to understanding disease processes and/or treatments in pediatric ophthalmic patients.
