The
Section on Orthopaedics, founded in 1976, is dedicated to improving the care of infants, children and adoles-
cents by providing an educational forum for the discussion of problems and treatments related to orthopaedics in
children.
Membership in the Section is open to physicians boarded by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery who de-
vote at least 50% of their practice to the care of infants, children, and adolescents; members of the Pediatric Ortho-
paedic Society of North America (POSNA); and members of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons
(AAOS) who are eligible for membership.
The Section on Orthopaedics holds its business meeting and educational program at the AAP's National Conference
& Exhibition (NCE). The Section also proposes educational topics for seminars and plenary sessions that would be
of interest to the general pediatrician such as the popular "Taping, Splinting, and Casting" workshop. Educational
programs that the Section has presented in the past include "Management of Common Children's Sports Injuries -
Keep it in Your Office,"
"Update on Scoliosis," "Symposium: New Perspectives in the Diagnosis and Management of
DDH," and "Office Orthopaedics for the Primary Care Pediatrician."
The Section's two-day educational program highlights oral research presentations from across the country and
offers networking opportunities through the annual Resident Recognition Reception. During the program, three Resi-
dent Research Awards are given in the amounts of $1,000, $500, and $250 for the best papers presented by
a
resident, fellow or student. The Distinguished Service Award is also presented at the NCE, which honors an indi-
vidual in the field of pediatric orthopaedics who has contributed to the Academy's mission of excellence in the
areas of patient care,
research, or teaching.
