The
Section on Pediatric Dentistry and Oral Health was formed in 1999 to improve
the care of infants, children and adolescents by providing
an educational forum for the discussion of problems and treatments
related to oral health. The Section focuses on improving communications
between pediatricians and pediatric dentists, improving advocacy
for oral health, proper nutrition, early diagnosis and prevention
of dental disease and malocclusions in infants, children,
adolescents, young adults and those with special health care
needs. The Section provides educational programming for both
pediatricians and pediatric dentists, creating a forum for
the development and dissemination of research relevant to
Pediatric Dentistry as a specialty.
All
Associate Members (Pediatric Dentists) of the American Academy
of Pediatrics are automatically enrolled into the Section
on Pediatric Dentistry. Membership in the section is also
open to other members of the Academy who have an active interest
in pediatric dentistry.
- The
benefits of this Section to the pediatric community include:
- the development of a forum for scholarly interchange in a
formal environment;
- the opportunity for young faculty and trainees to present
research data to the pediatricians and pediatric dentists
in the community;
- and the ability for pediatric dentists and pediatricians to
share information through joint educational sessions at the
American Academy of Pediatrics meetings.
