Workshop on Perinatal Practice Strategies
Scottsdale, AZ (April 9-11, 2010)

Originally conceived and planned in 1988 by the late Joe Butterfield, this meeting is designed to help neonatologists in all types of practices learn skills necessary to "get the job done," as opposed to more traditional meetings designed to discuss treatment strategies, use of medications, and so on - or how to "do the job". Sponsored by the AAP Section on Perinatal Pediatrics and the American Academy of Pediatrics and taking place at the beautiful DoubleTree Paradise Valley Resort.

March of Dimes' Symposium on Quality Improvement
to Prevent Prematurity


In October, 2009, this Symposium brought together a multidisciplinary group to discuss quality improvement as an essential component in the strategy to prevent prematurity, promote health, and save costs.The Symposium explored the state of quality initiatives to prevent preterm birth and developed an action agenda to decrease the rate of preterm births that are not inevitable or medically necessary.

ABP Explains Maintenance of Certification

In the past, medical specialists and subspecialists focused on Board certification. The new standard, however, is Maintenance of Certification (MOC), of which Board certification is just one of four parts. The American Board of Pediatrics (ABP) has created a new presentation to demystify MOC and to detail how MOC will change in 2010.

Youths With Cochlear Implants Report Good Quality of Life

(2/4/10) A study done by the Dallas Cochlear Implant Program found children with cochlear implants rated their quality of life as high as those with normal hearing. Researchers said younger children were happier than adolescents but gave their famly lives lower scores than did children with normal hearing.

Studies on Fragile X Drugs Might Aid Treatment of Autism

(2/4/10) Research aimed at discovering treatments for fragile X syndrome, a genetic disorder that causes intellectual disabilty, might also provide clues to treating autism. Studies on mGIuR5 antagonists involve adults but might benefit children and provide a "promising pathway" for autism, an offical of the National Institute of Mental Health said.

Industrial Chemical is Sold as Autism Supplement

(2/4/10) An industrial chemical used in mining called OSR#1 is being sold as a dietary supplement for children with autism, according to a Los Angeles Times report. Health experts and researchers said the chemical could be dangerous and hasn't been evaluated in formal clinical trials for safety or efficacy.
