New FlagQuestion: I am a new fellowship director and was wondering whether someone could let me know what the specific documentation requirements are for “graduating” fellows.  Specifically, we have two graduates this year who are submitting or have submitted a first author manuscript which may not be published by completion of fellowship.  Is there a specific form/format to be completed to document their scholarly activities, are there templates that I could refer to?

Answer: Welcome to program directorship. The following link came from the ONTPD web page (you can just google "ONTPD") under program directors and follow the various links. Here is the URL for the subspecialty requirements of the ABP. Please let me know if you need any additional help with this.

New FlagQuestion:
I was contacted by a neonatal fellow applicant, today who was canceling his interview because he was accepted at a program offering a prematch position.

He had applied to us via ERAS. For our program I am not concerned about losing an applicant but I would like clarification as to whether this is proper based on our fellowship director agreements about the match.

This fellow applicant is a foreign medical school grad but will be a US Pediatric Residency graduate at the time he starts his fellowship. Apparently pediatric residents, who are foreign medical graduates can be taken outside the pediatric residency match but is this the case with fellow applicants if they are either H1B, J1, or foreign medical graduates but US trained pediatric residents?

This is quite important for us to know especially in the NY area there are a lot of excellent foreign medical grads who are USA trained pediatric residents.

I have been telling these applicants that I am only going through the match. Did I shoot myself in the foot? Did the fellowship director who took the applicant described above break the rules?

Answer:
We have had a few other reports of people doing a "pre-match" deal. One of them actually happened at a non-ERAS participating program (there are not many). I have asked for names of the institutions providing the "prematch" so I could look into it, but the people involved did not like the idea of providing names. At this juncture, we have no "laws" about this. However, the institutions providing the "pre-match" may be shooting themselves in the foot. I am willing to look into this further if you provide me the name of the institution that is providing the "pre-match.

Question:
Hi,
I am a 4th year pediatric resident at Jordan Hospital (in middle east) I want to do Neonatology Fellowship in 2009. I want to apply for this, but I don't know if it is permitted for me as I finished my residency outside USA (in Jordan), but I  passed USMLE step2 & I am preparing for step 1. Please can you help me answer this question .

Answer:
Most programs will be participating in the match through the NMRP in 2009. Application for most programs will be through ERAS. There is a link on the fellowship application page that will take you to the websites for both ERAS and NRMP. There you can see who is and is not participating in ERAS. Those programs not participating can be applied to directly. Those who are will use the common application format and timeline which begins in November 2008. Many programs will not accept fellows who are not board eligible in Pediatrics and who have not trained in Pediatrics in the US. However, some programs do accept FMG that have not had previous training in the US. You will need to contact individual programs to determine whether they accept applications from FMG without prior pediatric training in an ACGME-accredited program.
