Scope of Committee Work
Since its formation in 1996, the Section on International Child Health (SOICH) has grown steadily to become one of the Academy's largest sections. SOICH members share a common interest in working to improve the well-being of children all over the world, particularly those living where access to essential health resources are limited. Our activities are centered on the education of AAP members and the global community-at-large, service that positively impacts children's health worldwide, advocacy on behalf of those without a voice, and partnership with our friends and colleagues abroad.
Current Initiatives
Awarding of grants that support pediatricians in less developed countries who are working to improve the lives of children in their communities.
Development of the International Child Health Network, a web-based association of pediatricians and other health professionals who understand the critical importance of effective partnerships in successful child health initiatives.
Providing a directory of overseas opportunities for pediatricians interested in volunteer work abroad.
Awarding International Travel Grants each year to pediatric residents who are pursuing training electives in other countries.
Creation of meaningful educational materials that help further member activities, including the "Working in International Child Health" manual and the "Atlas of Pediatrics in the Tropics and Resource-Limited Settings".
