Child Protection Service
Unit Provides medical and social diagnosis and assessment to professionals in cases of alleged child abuse and neglect. Hospital inpatient and outpatient referrals accepted. Educational role for physicians, other staff and residents.
The Suspected Child Abuse and Neglect (SCAN) Program at the Hospital for Sick Children, affiliated with the University of Toronto, is one of the largest hospital-based child maltreatment programs in Canada. It is a multidisciplinary team whose members include pediatricians, social workers, and a psychologist. Team members provide care for children, from birth to 18 years of age, and their families where any form of child abuse or neglect is suspected or confirmed. Services include, medical and psychosocial assessment. Program members provide consultation to its hospital staff, community health professionals, child protection agencies, law enforcement, legal personnel and other community agencies. The Program is also active in educational and policy development endeavors at the local, national and international level. Scan Program members are involved in some research activity on child maltreatment.
The program provides assessment, diagnosis and management to children and families where any aspect of child maltreatment is an issue. Inpatient and outpatient referrals are accepted. The overall aim of the program is to reduce the burden of suffering associated with child maltreatment through clinical, educational and research activities. The program is affiliated with the Centre for Studies of Children at Risk.
