The Emergency Department in cooperation with the Social Service Department provides medical and psychosocial evaluations to victims of child abuse/neglect and their families. The medical team will diagnose and treat the physical signs of abuse/neglect and arrange medical follow-up upon discharge. The social worker will assess the family's strengths, stressors, and conflicts. In all cases of documented abuse/neglect, a report is made to DCYS for social follow-up. Other community referrals may be made and continued contact with the hospital social worker is usually encouraged.

We are a community hospital Emergency Department. As such we are frequently the resource for first contact in cases involving abuse/neglect. We assess patients who are abused/neglected and work with a state agency (DCYS) for disposition. We have a formalized protocol for cases involving abuse/neglect and all cases are referred to the hospital social services department and other community resources as appropriate.
