The Crescent House, a service of The Children's Hospital at the Medical Center of Central Georgia, is a children's advocacy center maintaining full membership status with Children's Advocacy Centers of Georgia, Inc. Our primary goal is to insure the safety and well-being of the children in our community who are suspected of having been sexually abused. The Crescent House provides a child-friendly environment for these children to obtain services and begin the process of recovery. At our facility, specially trained medical staff conduct forensic medical exams using a colposcope in a much less traumatizing environment than a typical emergency room. Child Life Specialists are available as well to prepare the child for the experience and assist them with differentiating between any abuse that may have occurred and the Crescent House evaluation. In addition to the medical exam, the Crescent House also has specially trained staff who conduct forensic interviews with children. Again, these interviews are conducted in a child-friendly environment utilizing the most up to date interviewing techniques designed to allow the credibility of the child to come through. Multi-disciplinary team review of cases is also available to avoid duplication of services and to insure that proper follow-up such as mental health referrals are carried out. In addition to the on-site services provided, the Crescent House is also actively involved in community education through the "Stewarts of Childen" child sexual abuse prevention program and other educational outreach programs.
