Children's Health Center is a referral center for multidisciplinary evaluation and treatment of issues confronting families and children. Service areas include six interrelated program components. (1) B-Safe Clinic - sexual abuse forensic evaluation clinic provides comprehensive medical evaluation and treatment for sexually abused children. Examination by colposcope is conducted. (2) CAIRE - Cocaine affected infants evaluation and rehabilitation services. This is the State's only existing program. (3) HAPPY BEAR - Sexual abuse prevention education for preschool children. (4) Assessment of physical trauma. (5) Foster care health appraisal evaluation and follow-up.

The University of Iowa maintains a tertiary program in all aspects of child abuse focusing more on physical abuse, neglect, emotional abuse, and medical child abuse. Children are evaluated for child abuse through Child Assessment Clinic (dedicated to the evaluation of abuse and neglect), outpatient clinics and inpatient units, and a wide array of support services are offered including pediatric radiology, pediatric ophthalmology, nutrition, comprehensive development evaluations, pediatric orthopedics, and colposcopic examinations. Cases range from acute examination to court-ordered cases requiring developmental evaluations and placement recommendations. Acute medical care and on-going tertiary development evaluations complement local service providers. In addition, extensive case consultation, expert testimony, and teaching are provided throughout Iowa, and active research efforts and collaborative statewide projects are underway regarding a wide variety of child abuse concerns.

The Child Protection Center is committed to the interdisciplinary evaluation and treatment of children suspected of having been abused especially sexually abused. Children are seen at the request of Department of Human Services or law enforcement officers. The evidentiary interview is video taped. Medical exam is done with the use of a colposcope. The team meets after each evaluation to determine if child is protected, if treatment is necessary and to discuss the evidentiary evidence. Main philosophy is to avoid re-victimization of the child.

This program provides facilities for forensic interviews that may be done by MDT team members or an on-site interviewer according to the teams needs, medical exams including in-deph screening for behavioral/developmental concerns related to the child and an assessment of adult caretaker concerns to guide intervention/treatment referrals for the child and family, advocacy, and community education services. Substance abuse screenings of infants, children, and adults is facilitated through the center's interactions with the Department of Human Services in case investigations.
