Bright, MD, FAAP (606) 253-6699 The University of Kentucky Department of Pediatrics provides the medical component for child sexual abuse investigations for the eastern portion of Kentucky. Referrals come from primary care physicians, in cooperation with local child protective social workers and police. Patients are examined at the Child Advocacy Center of the Bluegrass. For local Fayette County cases, the Advocacy Center provides coordinated, comprehensive services, including investigative interviews, individual and group counseling, and referrals of children and families for other needed support services. U.K. pediatricians are available for consultation with other professionals involved in these cases and provide expert courtroom testimony when necessary. In addition, the physicians also conduct educational and training programs for physicians and other health care workers, as well as for non-medical professionals involved in child sexual abuse cases. Advocacy Center of the Bluegrass The Children's
Advocacy Center of the Bluegrass is a child-focused, facility based
program that uses a multidisciplinary team approach to assist in the
coordination of the judical and social service systems' response to
child sexual abuse.
The Lexington-Fayette County Health Department provides medical evaluations for children suspected of having been sexually abused. Patient referrals come from social workers and police and are limited to Fayette and contiguous counties. Patients are examined at the Child Advocacy Center of the Bluegrass, which provides comprehensive services to child victims and their families. Physician consultation with other involved professionals and expert courtroom testimony are provided as needed.
The Division of Forensic Medicine at University of Louisville School of Medicine with Kosair Children's Hospital serves as a 24/7 referraly resource for medical evaluation of children who are the suspected victims of child abuse or neglect. In addition, Division faculty provides pediatric sexual abuse medical assessments at the local Family and Children First Child Advocacy Center. The physical abuse consultation service operates primarily out of Kosair Children's Hospital, where its multidisciplinary assessment team (including the child abuse pediatricians, nurses, and a social worker) works with hospital medical personnel, local child protection, and law enforcement to help ensure the safety of the children in Kentucky and Southern Indiana. Expert court testimony is provided when necessary. The Division of Forensic Medicine also provides multiple educational programs regarding recognition, assessment, intervention, and investigation of child maltreatment for medical professionals and community-based organizations such as law enforcement and child protection. Division faculty have established a weekly multidisciplinary team (MDT) meeting with local child protection, law enforcement, hospital social workers, county attorney's office and public health to address "systems issues" as they pertain to the collaborative assessment of child maltreatment. This MDT is serving as a model for statewide reproduction. The team also participates in local and state Child Fatality Review, and serves as ongoing collaborators with state government and community based organizations to ensure the safety of the children in the state. There is close partnership between the University-based team and Kosair Children's Hospital. The program is funded in part by a combination of state and local contacts and a grant from Kosair Charities.
Child sexual abuse examinations are conducted by Dr. Humkey, as part of the St. Claire Medical Center's Primary Care System. Dr. Humkey sees patients from the hospital's surrounding eleven county service area. Referrals come mostly via Department of Social Services, and occasionally from police or other physicians within the area. Court testimony is also provided.
The Child Advocacy Clinic of Family Health Services provides comprehensive medical services for child and adolescent victims of sexual and physical abuse. Mentally retarded adults have been examined for sexual abuse in selected cases. Services consist of confidential files, colposcopic examination, culturing for sexually transmitted diseases, collection of forensic data, consultation with social workers, law enforcement, and physicians, and expert court testimony. Patient referrals are from southeastern and south central Kentucky.

Area Child Advocacy Center, Inc. The Big Sandy Area Child Advocacy Center provides comprehensive services to child and adolescent victims of sexual abuse in a child-friendly setting. Comprehensive medical services are provided by physicians with specialized training in child sexual abuse examinations. Mental health screening is provided on location on the day of examination.
