The Family Advocacy Center is part of the department of pediatrics of Baystate Children's Hospital. We provide evaluation and treatment of children who have been victims of physical or sexual abuse or witnesses to domestic violence. Clinical activities include outpatient clinic (the Family Development Clinic) in which medical examinations are given to victims of child abuse and sexual abuse and court ordered assessments, often in the context of custody conflicts, are conducted; a sexual abuse diagnostic and treatment clinic in the Department of Psychiatry; and a Child Protection Team which offers consultation on a 24 hour a day basis to all clinical units at the Children's Hospital. The program also includes an advocacy program for battered women (called AWAKE, for Advocacy for Women and Kids in Emergencies). AWAKE offers emergency consultation, liaison to community battered women's service agencies, access to specialized legal, social service, medical, and housing resources, and training.
