The DeVos Children's Hospital Child Protection Team (CPT) provides comprehensive medical evaluation for children to facilitate the prevention, identification, diagnosis, and treatment of child abuse and neglect in West Michigan through education, clinical practice and research. This is a multifaceted hospital-based program providing evaluation of physically and sexually abused children on an inpatient and outpatient basis with team members from Pediatrics, Adolescent, Critical Care, Neonatal, Emergency Medicine, Radiology, Law, Social Work, Pastoral Care, Nursing and Administration. Other professionals participate in case review and are available for consultation using a team approach coordinated with Law Enforcement, District Attorneys, and Child Protective Services. Consultation is provided by appointment and the Child Protection Team serves as a resource to the hospital, community and region for training, research and patient evaluation in child abuse and neglect. Resident physicians, social work interns, graduate psychology students and medical students receive training from CPT. The CPT collaborates with the Kent County Children's Assessment Center to provide 24-hour evaluations of sexual abuse and sponsors parenting programs in the community and correctional facilities, groups for children exposed to violence, and forensic interviewing and parent-child interaction therapy for high risk families.

Serves as consultant to Protective Services when a comprehensive medical examination of an abused child is necessary. Outpatient appointments are made for physical examination, medical testing, diagnosis, appropriate reporting. Unable to accept acute care or emergency cases at this setting. Colposcopy available, if necessary, for sexual abuse evaluations. Experienced in expert testimony locally. Important educational component for the residents in Pediatrics, Family Practice, Medicine/Pediatrics, and Emergency Medicine as well as medical students at this campus of Michigan State University.

The Child Protection Team at the University of Michigan provides consultation to medical professionals, protective service workers, law enforcement and prosecuting attorneys on cases of suspected abuse. The team provides consultation on cases of physical abuse, sexual abuse and pediatric condition falsification. The team consists of two physicians and three social workers all of whom are dedicated to the health of children and the education of all professionals in many fields of child protection in the area of child abuse and domestic violence.
