McHugh, MD, MPH, FAAP Vincent Palusci, MD, MS, FAAP Lori Legano, MD, FAAP Child protection services at Bellevue Hospital are provided in an intradisciplinary program under the direction of Margaret T. McHugh, MD, MPH. This team provides assessments that are focused on the unique developmental needs of each child and adolescent. Specialized protocols for developmentally delayed and/or physically impaired children are utilized by staff members to insure a comprehensive evaluation in a child-focused environment. Each member of the team participates in the on-going interdisciplinary training program designed to provide a meaningful clinical experience for health professionals in training. With this current program, a core of professionals with extensive training evaluates cases in which child sexual abuse is suspected. Evaluations are coordinated with Child Protection Services and criminal justice systems to minimize the number of professionals interacting with the child and family.
The Children's Advocacy Center of Manhattan is a privately funded, non-profit agency affiliated with The Mount Sinai Medical Center. It provides forensic evaluations of children suspected of physical and sexual abuse and their families in cooperation with the NYC Police Department, Administration for Children's Services, and the Manhattan DA's office. The Center also provides treatment for the non-offending parent(s) and the victimized child.
The Child Sexual Abuse Program provides consultation to the primary care providers of 40 Child Health Clinics in New York City. Referrals from community pediatricians, child advocacy groups, local Child Protective Services, foster care agencies, police and district attorneys are also accepted. The consultants are board certified and trained to do sexual abuse assessments which include medical interview, physical examination and appropriate laboratory examinations. Hospital-based child protection program, which provides evaluation of physical abuse, sexual abuse and neglect. Referrals for sexual abuse expertise are received from local child protection services (3 counties), county and local police as well as from primary care providers from within the health system and the surrounding communities. Multidisciplinary team has monthly case review/management meetings with participation from local child protection professional. Pediatric residents are trained through the program. Queens

Child Advocacy Center is operated by Safe Horizon in partnership with
the New York City Administration for Children's Services, the New York
City Police Department, the Office of the Queens District Attorney,
the New York City Law Department, Office of Corporation Counsel, and
Schneider services including the full range of expert medical evaluations
are provided. The professionals in the center provide a broad range
of training to the surrounding child protection, medical and lay communities.
Hospital-based Child Advocacy Center with referrals directly from the community agencies, the primary care physicians, and city agencies, law enforcement and child protection services. The Center has a multidisciplinary team with ongoing case management review team meeting. Joint investigative interviews are conducted at the Center via two way mirror with video capabilities. Pediatric residents and emergency room fellows are trained through the Center.
The Family Advocacy Program consists of an interdisciplinary team of two physicians, one pediatric nurse practitioner, three social workers, and social worker/child abuse coordinator. The team meets for two formal sessions per week; one devoted to case review, one devoted to direct patient care. In the patient care session all patients receive medical evaluations, social work intervention is done where indicated. All suspected cases receive social services ranging from telephone outreach to direct crisis intervention and referral for therapy. The team is available for inpatient and outpatient consultation of suspected cases. We also provide consultation and direct patient evaluations for local child protective services, schools, private physicians and the courts.
The Child Protection Center (CPC) is a critical component of the Montefiore Child Health Network, a broad-reaching, coordinated system of programs and resources focused on the needs of children in the Bronx and lower Westchester. Administered by Montefiore's Division of Community Pediatrics, the Center provides critical emergency medical and psycho-social evaluation for children who are victims of sexual abuse and physical abuse or neglect. In addition, the CPC also evaluates children "at-risk" for abuse and who need comprehensive exams. These children have often been removed from their caretakers due to domestic violence, substance abuse, poverty, inadequate medical attention and nutrition. Since 1984, over 9,000 children and their families have been treated at the CPC. During 1996, over 740 children received medical and social work services from the expert CPC team. After initial evaluation, each child is entered into the database and tracked by dedicated volunteers for as long as several years to monitor their progress.

The CARE Program uses a team approach to provide medical evaluations of children suspected to have been abused. This team provides medical care, offers social and psychological assessments and evaluations, patient/family education and support, and child advocacy. There is a close working relationship with county social services and law enforcement agencies as evidentiary interviews are performed. Follow-up care is either directly provided or implemented by referral. The team is available for court testimony and educates other professionals by offering an Intensive Clinical Fellowship in Child Abuse. Referrals are received from a variety of sources from several surrounding counties, such as the Rape Crisis Center, sheriff and city police abused persons units, New York State police, district attorneys offices, departments of social service child protective units as well as from physicians, parents, counselors and patients.
The Family Support Program, located in northern Manhattan, is staffed by a multidisciplinary team of professionals skilled in the evaluation and treatment of children suspected of having been sexually or physically abused or neglected. The staff includes two pediatricians trained in sexual abuse evaluation, a pediatric surgeon, a clinical social worker, a pediatric psychologist, a caseworker and a coordinator. Comprehensive medical and mental health services are provided. As needed, the team coordinates its efforts with the Administration for Children Services, the District Attorney's Office and Special Victims. Community outreach and education are also provided.
The Child & Family Support Program, located on the Upper East Side (Manhattan) and East Harlem, is staffed by a multidisciplinary team of professionals skilled in the evaluation and treatment of children suspected of having been sexually or physically abused or neglected. The staff includes three pediatricians trained in sexual abuse evaluation, four pediatric fellows, two clinical social workers, a pediatric clinical psychologist expert in trauma-focused interventions, and a coordinator. Comprehensive medical and mental health services are provided with liaison to Child Psychiatry at the Mount Sinai Medical Center. As needed, the team coordinates its efforts with the Administration for Children Services, the District Attorney's Office and Special Victims. Community outreach and education are are provided.
The Child Advocacy Center, established in 1995, is the first hospital-based program for maltreated New York City children. The Center is a safe haven where the needs of the child are paramount, where medical professionals and involved agencies meet and talk in one location, conduct a joint investigation, where treatment is offered promptly, and where children are protected. The Child Advocacy Center is open daily and brings together the Administration for Children's Services, law enforcement agencies, the District Attorney's office, the Mayor's Criminal Justice Child Abuse Task Force, educators and an interdisciplinary professional staff to improve the investigation, prosecution and management of child abuse cases.
Facility for the forensic interviewing and forensic medical examinations of alleged child sexual abuse victims. Referrals from Child Protective Services and Police Agencies. Facility serves entire Dutchess County area, and provides courtesy services to surrounding counties.
The Advocacy Center is an independent multidisciplinary site for the evaluation of children reported to child welfare. A sexual abuse unit of Administration for Children's Services as well as a Sex Crimes squad of the Police Department and an Assistant District Attorney and Victim's Services are at the center on a continuous basis. The physicians are there on a part-time basis.
This is a specialized clinic for the evaluation of children who may have been sexually abused. Referrals are accepted from physicians, foster care agencies, child welfare as well as police. Physicians, a nurse practitioner and social worker are available for the evaluation. The team is available for inpatient consultation as well.
