Children at Risk Evaluation (CARE) Center Children's Hospital Medical Center of Akron One Perkins Square Akron, OH 44308 (330) 379-8453 or (800) 430-4060 Director: R. Daryl Steiner, DO, FAAP The CARE Center developed as an off-shoot of the Department of Emergency Services because of the need to establish a controlled care program for victims of abuse. The CARE Center provides a complete multidisciplinary team approach to the evaluation and treatment of these children. An active effort of interaction with the legal system affords the strong lines of communication should treatment need to be expanded through the courts. The CARE Center provides 5 day per week services and when coupled with the Emergency Services this gives 24 hr per day, 7 day per week expertise.
The Child Abuse Team of Children's Hospital Medical Center is active in child abuse diagnosis, treatment, education, research and prevention. The Team is composed of pediatricians from the Division of Emergency Medicine and social workers from the Department of Social Services. Child advocacy is closely coordinated with community organizations and agencies. Children can be scheduled for an appointment in the Social and Medical Clinic by calling 513/636-4711. Professional consultation is available by contacting Dr. Shapiro or Ms. Myers.
Phone: 937-512-1670 (CARE
House, also patient scheduling for CARE Clinic) The CARE Clinic provides outpatient diagnostic evaluation of child sexual abuse, physical abuse and neglect for referring community agencies and physicians. Physician consultation is also available for inpatients. CARE House, Montgomery County's child advocacy center, officially opened in February 1999. It is located across the street from Children's Medical Center at 741 Valley Street. CARE House serves as a centralized, child-oriented facility for child interviews, multidisciplinary team investigations, and treatment services for child abuse victims. Sixteen professionals from Children's Medical Center, the Dayton Police Department, Montgomery County Children Services, Montgomery County Prosecutor's Office, and Montgomery County Sheriff's Office are assigned to CARE House. The CARE Team is a multidisciplinary team developed to assist in the evaluation and treatment planning for cases of child abuse/neglect. The CARE Team meets weekly and is now based at CARE House. Members include representatives from child protective services, child psychology, law enforcement, pediatrics, prosecution, social work, and victim advocacy. The goals of the CARE Team are to enhance communication among and to provide consultation for professionals in our region who encounter child maltreatment.
The Center for Child and Family Advocacy (CCFA) is a partnership between Nationwide Children's Hospital and the Columbus Coalition Against Family Violence. A multidisciplinary staff of more than 120 professionals have partnered to work together to address the complex issue of family violence, providing a service delivery spanning the full spectrum from assessment and investigation, trauma-focused treatment, and prevention including outreach, education and evidence-based models of home visitation. Evaluation and management of all types of child maltreatment are provided in the outpatient and inpatient clinical settings. Forensic interviews, colposcope guided medical evaluations, mental health assessment and treatment are the key components to the clinical services provided in the Child Assessment Center and Family Support Program - the trauma-focused treatment program. An active inpatient consultation service provides support to children from a broad region of the state. CCFA staff are members of the Department of Pediatrics at the Ohio State University College of Medicine, and provide education to medical and nursing students, residents, fellows, faculty, and community agencies. The child abuse pediatrics fellowship training program provides further subspecialty training in a vibrant academic setting. All faculty are involved in research activities with several projects supported by intramural as well as extramural, federally funded grants.
Multidisciplinary team offers medical evaluation of victims to agencies in Northwest Ohio. In addition, psychological evaluations are provided with access to all medical specialties when indicated. The members, a pediatrician, clinical nurse specialist, social workers, and psychologist, provide court assistance when called.
The Child Protection Program has three major components: (1) The Care Clinic, an outpatient evaluation and diagnostic center for child sexual abuse. Referrals come from such sources as medical and mental health care providers, social service agencies, legal and law enforcement units, and parents themselves. A multidisciplinary team provides evaluation services including psychosocial assessments, complete medical examinations, and referrals. (2) Consultation services to hospital inpatient divisions. They include psychosocial assessments, medical evaluations, recommendations for additional test, conferring with divisions and clinics about cases of child abuse, coordinating with outside agencies, court appearances and other communications with the legal community, and educational activities about child abuse. (3) Telephone consultation services to staff, community professionals and parents on issues of abuse and neglect. Child Protection
