The Child Abuse and Neglect Program Children's Hospital of Philadelphia 34th Street and Civic Center Boulevard Philadelphia, PA 19104 (215) 590-2058 (215) 590-2180 (Fax) Director: Cindy W. Christian, MD, FAAP Safe Place: The Center for Child Protection and Health at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia is the only children's hospital in Philadelphia that has an established program and fellowship in child abuse and neglect. The hospital has provided comprehensive interdisciplinary services to maltreated children since 1974. Our multidisciplinary team consists of physicians, social workers, nurses psychologists and other hospital personnel who have a long standing interest and extensive experience in diagnosing and providing intervention for abused children. Both inpatient and ambulatory care is provided to maltreated children. The ambulatory CARE clinic (Child Abuse Referral and Evaluation) is the only medical program in Philadelphia that specifically addresses the special medical needs of the youngest victims of sexual abuse. Safe Place also provides comprehensive health and developmental care to children in foster care through the Starting Young program. Members of the hospital's child abuse team serve as consultants to many Pennsylvania professional organizations who work with abused children. We have been instrumental in creating a state-wide educational program for primary care physicians in the recognition and reporting of suspected maltreatment. The faculty members have been involved in research in the field for more than 30 years, and continue their involvement in researce, education and advocacy at the regional and national level.
Children's Advocacy Center of the Central Susquehanna Valley With the help of benevolent community conscious citizens and our legislators, the Center for Child Protection at Sunbury Community Hospital was started 2-3 years ago. The main thrust of the Center is to evaluate children via a videotaped psychosocial interview and via a physical examination as well as a colposcopic exam. We have not ventured into the therapeutic aspect of this problem.
Ten year old hospital/county based child protective team. Ten years of yearly 200 student seminars. In addition, Dr. Rosenberg has 150 child abuse referrals from 4-county areas.
Children's Advocacy Center was begun to alleviate the trauma to abused children of having to go from place to place) i.e. hospital, police station, child welfare etc.) and repeat themselves over and over. The CAC is set in a homely environment and the resources come to the child. Therapy is also available at the home through the local mental health system. Abuse education and coordination of services are part of the program also.
