Medical University of South Carolina Department of Pediatrics MUSC Children's Hospital Charleston, SC 29425 (803) 953-8459 (803) 792-2123 (Night or Weekend) (803) 953-8459 (Fax) Director: Sara E. Schuh, MD, MPH, FAAP The Medical University of South Carolina Department of Pediatrics has a full program for evaluation of children and adolescents for allegations of abuse and neglect. These include both emergent and non-emergent cases, in-patient and outpatient. Intensive Care Unit admissions are available when indicated. Physician, nursing and social work services and patient advocate are available. Psychiatric support is also available when indicated.
Our program for medical evaluation of child abuse, both physical and sexual, is staffed by a physician, a social worker, a nurse, a child life specialist and a volunteer part-time counselor. Although we have seen child abuse cases in our training program for several years, the clinic was just organized in September 1990.
This center opened in April, 1996. Medical exams are performed at the center for suspected victims of child sexual abuse. Weekly staffing are an important part of the agency which involve the physician, DSS, law enforcement, GAL, mental health and the solicitors office. Therapy and extended assessments are also available at the center. Abuse education and coordination of services are a major part of this program.
The child
sexual abuse clinic provides expert medical exams for all non acute
sexually abused children. The exams are performed with the help of
child-life and are primarily referred from DSS and law enforcement.
We hope to provide a separate facility for the evaluation of suspected
victims within the next six months. |
