Evaluation includes an interview of child (brief not videotaped) and a physical examination with colposcope and photos. Report is prepared for referring physician or agency.
The ABC Center meets four days a week to evaluate children for alleged sexual or physical abuse. The Center is staffed by a physician, physician's assistant, and social worker. Most referrals are from regional child protection and law enforcement agencies. Evaluation consists of a brief interview followed by complete physical examination and colposcopy with photography. Videotaped forensic interviews are performed at the nearby Advocacy Center for Children of Galveston County, which also provides short-term counseling. ABC Center professionals participate in regional multidisciplinary case reviews and child death review teams. The Center is the primary facility for child abuse training at the University of Texas Medical Branch, providing teaching experiences for pediatric residents as well as medical and allied-health students. The Center is linked to other Texas child abuse centers through the Texas Telemedicine Peer Review Network.
The CARE Team conducts medical interviews, medical and forensic evaluations, psychosocial assessments, preventative education and participates in multidisciplinary reviews for victims of sexual abuse, physical abuse and neglect. The CARE Team serves as a resource for parents, primary care physicians, law enforcement and the Texas Department of Protective and Regulatory Services. The CARE Team and other Cook Children's Medical Center health professionals work together to assess the family's needs and provide treatment and follow-up care. Social workers specializing in child protection issues are available to facilitate consultation, reporting and crisis intervention. The CARE Team also make referrals to other community agencies for counseling needs.
Agencies/disciplines currently housed at ACAC primarily address suspected child/adolescent sexual abuse and include a medical component, victim assistants, case managers, therapists, three assistant district attorneys, an outreach, public relations department, detectives from Sex Crimes units, and the sexual abuse unit from Child Protective Services. Services offered include counseling, medical evaluations, telemedicine consultations, CPS assessments, child interviews, multidisciplinary reviews and staffings, court school for children, training for health professionals, community presentations, and testimony. One physician (Professor of Pediatrics at University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio), one nurse practitioner, and one SANE nurse comprise the medical staff; medical evaluations are scheduled 5 days per week. Goldsbury Center for Miracles The Center provides medical, development and family assessments for children and adolescents who are suspected victims of physical abuse or neglect. Services include photodocumentation and crisis counseling. A child abuse fellowship program will be based at the Center beginning in late 2008.
Provides complete medical evaluations on children suspected of being abused or neglected including forensic/colposcopic and photographic evaluations. Staff includes social services, psychological services, and multidisciplinary team which meets twice weekly and collaborates with an advocacy center and peer review CARE and fatality review team.
The C.A.R.E. Center provides forensic evaluations, preventive education, multidisciplinary reviews, coordination of the Child Fatality Review Team, Failure to Thrive evaluation and expert medical testimony for children who may have been abused or neglected. Education and training is provided to residents, medical students, partner agencies and the community. A patient Data Base, research, linking with other centers and serving as consultants for area professionals is provided.
The REACH Team consists of two fellowship-trained physicians, a part-time pediatric nurse practitioner, social worker, medical assistant and an administrative coordinator. REACH provides comprehensive medical evaluations for children suspected of being abused and neglected, including colposcopy, forensic exams, physical abuse and/or neglect evaluations, and consultations on serious child abuse cases admitted to Children's Hospital. In our outpatient capacity, we serve mainly Dallas County, but take other referrals on a case-by-case basis. The team meets weekly for peer review and operates in collaboration with the Dallas Children's Advocacy Center where forensic interviews, multidisciplinary reviews and mental health services are provided for children of Dallas County. We are called on for expert medical testimony and provide education on local, regional and national levels regarding child abuse, sexual assault, drug endangered children and child abuse prevention.
Harris County CPS medical clinic provides for comprehensive general pediatric care for children with CPS involvement. Services include initial assessment for physical abuse and neglect, medical examinations for placement, well child care and acute sick visits. Pediatric residents and medical students from University of Texas-Houston medical school receive some of their ambulatory training at the clinic as well as education on recognition and prevention of child maltreatment. Other functions of the clinic include consultation for case workers and coordination of medical care for children in foster care. A dental clinic is also on site. Texas Children's Hospital
Child Protection Program The focus of the Child Protection Program is to identify infants, children, and adolescents who are victims of abuse and /or neglect by their caretakers. The Child Protection Program embraces a team and systems approach. It utilizes the knowledge and skills of the medical/surgical specialties, nursing and allied health disciplines existing within Texas Children's Hospital. This program collaborates with community agencies verbally, by written records, and by court testimony to provide protection, therapy, and court action for abuse victims. The Child Protection Program is incorporated within the Emergency Medicine Department. The Child Protection Team consults and reviews inpatients and outpatients who are seen for suspected physical abuse, sexual abuse and/or neglect. The team is available for consultation on an as needed basis for all components of the Texas Children's Hospital Integrated Delivery System. Referrals come from a variety of sources including physicians, psychologist, counselors, Children's Protective Service, Law Enforcement and/or parents. The Child Protection Program has an established agreement with the Children's Assessment Center, the Child Advocacy Center for the Houston area, to provide medical services to children who are victims of suspected sexual abuse. Team members routinely interact with and provide information to Children's Protective Services, law enforcement, and judicial personnel (District Attorneys, Children's Ad Litem attorneys, family attorney, CASA volunteers).
